visual messages | mixed media + expression

design problem:Create a mixed media piece that sends a message through portraiture, color, mark-making, text, and materials.

PART 1 | BACKGROUND
    1) Choose an emotion to convey in your work. Be specific and original [sad, mad, love, hate not allowed].
      
      a. Free-write down a list of 5-10 emotions or characteristics.

        b. Circle your favorite two ideas, then draw colors, lines, and shapes that relate to it in your sketchbook.


       c. Draft your layout in your sketchbook. Use Rule of Thirds for focal point (portrait) and keep balanced with background shapes/colors.

       d. Lightly sketch or mask off 8"x10" area where face will be attached later using the Rule of Thirds. Do not draw on this area!

        e. Cut out shapes showing your emotion and attach to background using gel medium.


        f. Layer colors in oil pastel and color pencil on top of and around paper shapes. Add words and symbols that relate to your idea.

    PART 2 | PHOTOSHOP PORTRAIT MANIPULATION


    1. Take an EXPRESSIVE PHOTO OF YOUR FACE, looking at the camera. Use a strong light source (lamp) against a white wall.   
      Click HERE to access and save photos.


    1. OPEN PHOTO IN PHOTOSHOP
      1. Right click to open in Photoshop, and SAVE AS your last name in your Google Drive [sign in on Gmail and drag file to Google Drive]  or save to student folder.


    1. Follow the following directions in Photoshop to make a BLACK AND WHITE HIGH CONTRAST IMAGE.
      1. ADJUSTMENT -> MODE - > GRAYSCALE
      2. ADJUSTMENT -> CONTRAST/BRIGHTNESS -> make CONTRAST higher [drag tab to right]
      3. FILTER -> STAMP; PHOTOCOPY
      4. PRINT -> FULL PAGE [print 2 copies for yourself and turn in today]

    PART 3 | PHOTO TRANSFER
    5) Attach clear photo  to background with gel medium or adhesive.

    6) Continue layering materials to look like a finished product, filling 75% of paper.

    7) Transfer photo by layering 2 coats of gel medium on top of print, allow to dry, soak in warm water for 5 minutes, and peel away the paper by rubbing it with your finger.
