food painting

Objective Take an original, close up, color photo of food showcasing TEXTURE + COLOR. Use acrylic paint to recreate accurate values in this realistic image. Remember to think about the elements and principles of art and design to create a stronger composition.

Requirements 
• You must use reference material for all imagery
• You can only use acrylic paint
• You must demonstrate the ability to create values

Grading
Creativity + Subject  Original concept and execution of the idea

Composition  Overall layout, the focal point was well thought out and enhanced the piece, balanced and unified composition

Technique  Accurate values, mixing, blending, and layering applied. Clean edges on objects in foreground showing DETAILS, HIGHLIGHTS, and SHADOWS

Studio Process  Good use of class time, and works to continually improve work

Risk Taking  Student challenged him/herself both conceptually and technically

Studio Process
  1. Brainstorm ideas + take an original photo. What will appeal to a viewer? 
  2. Choose a photo that will take up the space. Remember to consider your timeline and ability level.
  3. Print 8x10 inch or larger image of your original, color, cropped, food photograph.
    1. Open original food photo in PHOTOSHOP
    2. Go to IMAGE -> ADJUSTMENTS -> CONTRAST / BRIGHTNESS
    3. Go to IMAGE -> ADJUSTMENTS -> HUE / SATURATION
    4. CROP image = 'Rule of Thirds' [off-center focal point]
    5. Go to IMAGE -> IMAGE SIZE -> 200 Resolution, 8 x 10 INCH width/height min
    6. Go to IMAGE -> CANVAS -> 200 Resolution, change to 8 x 10 INCH width/height. CROP EDGES
    7. Save to student folder
    8. Print 8x10 inch image in COLOR
    9. Sign name and turn in today
  4. Grid your PHOTO 1 inch x 1 inch
  5. Grid your NEWSPRINT 2 inch x 2 inch 
  6. Create a line drawing by recognizing the relationship between the shapes
  7. Use transfer paper to replicate your line drawing on your canvas
  8. Follow the rules of painting and work BACK TO FRONT. 
  9. Simplify the background and change colors/textures to enhance composition.
  10. Take your time, always have your reference images out, and be observant!
