Surrealism

Design Problem

Create a value drawing from visual references that shows realistic imagery in an unlikely situation. Manipulate proportions, placement, and combinations that are fantasy or dreamlike. view: worksheet  presentation


Criteria
Creativity + Risk-Taking
-Concept: Original and interesting  imagery showing a surreal situation that combines at least two realistic images
-Technically challenging arrangement that pushes artistic growth

Composition
-Used Elements + Principles for design/layout
-Shows a focal point, and a full range of values
-Used entire value scale to show contrast  



Craft + Technique
-Used reference material for all imagery
-No dark outlines to define forms - only VALUE
-Objects: Realistic proportions, details, and values
-Graphite Pencils: Blended pencil strokes


Studio Participation
-Efficient use of class time continually improving work
Studio Process

  1. Complete research + planning on back of this sheet.
  2. Grid your images 1 inch x 1 inch
  3. Grid your newsprint 3 inch x 3 inch
  4. Create a line drawing by recognizing the relationship between the shapes
  5. Use a light table to transfer the line drawing to your drawing paper
  6. Begin to fill in the basic shadow shapes with values.  Start light and gradually get darker. BLEND ALL PENCIL MARKS
  7. Take your time, always have your reference images out, and be observant!
