P+D1 | Value Studies

[1] Create a 10 cell VALUE SCALE in sketchbook, showing the lightest (white), mid-tones (gray), to the darkest (black) values within 1 inch squares.

[2] SHATTERED DRAWING:
(a)  Create a CONTOUR LINE DRAWING filling your page using a solid, bold lines. Define all DETAILS and EDGES of a 3D object of your choice drawn from life or from a photo.
(b) Draw 5-10 lines edge to edge over a sketchbook
(c) Shade inside ALL resulting broken shapes, fading from white to black, alternating  corners from one shape to the next.
(d) Use a BLENDING STUMP and 6B PENCIL to show high CONTRAST.
(e) View GRADING CRITERIA and assess your work before turning in for a grade.

Practice: Shade, blend, and label values of a SPHERE under a light source.

Studio Process:
  1. Use the right side of the brain to observing and recording a life size LIGHT UNDER DRAWING showing edges of form. 
  2. Add in MIDDLE VALUES on and around form using at least 8 tones (grays).
  3. Create CONTRAST making the darkest areas black and lightest areas (HIGHLIGHTS) white.
  4. Use VALUE SCALE or finder for reference, blending stump to eliminate all pencil strokes, and an eraser to create sharp clean edges.
